Is this a Stereotype or is it REAL?

I watched a movie called "Wrong Turn" a while back and it gave the Appilachian area ( West Virgina, and Kentucky) a very bad reputation for being full of scarry people like cannibals, and really crazy rednecks. I have also heard about a movie called "Deliverance" which is about the same kinds of things. My neighbor also told me people often just dissapera in Appalachia. The reason I'm worries is because Im from the north, and Im going to go to college in Kentucky and supposibly its the bad part of Kentucky. So im just asking for oppinions, do you think its just a streotype???
